Bupa names MD for UK Membership

30 July 2008 Breaking News

Bupa has appointed Dr Natalie-Jane Macdonald as managing director of its UK Membership business.

Previously medical and healthcare purchasing director for UK Membership, Dr Macdonald will report into Fergus Kee, managing director of Bupa UK and North America.

UK Membership is now part of Bupa's UK and North America division, following the management reshuffle earlier this year that saw finance director Ray King take on the role of chief executive, succeeding Val Gooding who has now retired after 12 years with the organisation.

In addition to the new roles for Dr Macdonald and Kee, a number of further senior appointments will be made "shortly", a spokesman said.

As part of the reshuffle, Kee now has overall responsibility for Bupa UK Membership, out-of-hospital care provider Clinovia, Health Dialog, a US and UK provider of chronic condition management and health coaching and Bupa Cromwell Hospital. He is also responsible for Bupa Commissioning, following Bupa's appointment in 2007 to the Department of Health's Framework for Procuring External Support for Commissioners.

Although she will report into Kee, Dr Macdonald will have day-to-day responsibility for UK Membership, which encompasses Bupa Health Assurance, its British private medical insurance business, as well as Bupa Wellness, Bupa Travel, Bupa Cash Plan and Bupa Dental.

Dr Macdonald joined Bupa in 2004 and has been its medical and health care purchasing director for the past five years, responsible for all of the insurance division's business and clinical relationships with healthcare providers in the acute sector.

Prior to joining Bupa, she was head of ethics and international affairs at the British Medical Association and has also worked in both the NHS and academic medicine. She also has a MBA from London Business School.

Dr Macdonald takes up her new position with effect from August 4 2008.
