Travel and protection insurance specialist sold to global insurer

Cigna has acquired FirstAssist Insurance Services, a provider of travel and protection insurance.

Cigna has bought the UK-based company from Barclays Private Equity in a deal expected to close in 2011, following regulatory approval. The acquisition is expected to help CIGNA expand into the global travel insurance market.

FirstAssist has nearly three million policy holders in the UK and specialises in travel, budget health, employment and legal-related insurance.

William L. Atwell, president of Cigna International, said: "This acquisition closely aligns with our growth strategy and mission to help the customers we serve improve their health, well-being and sense of security.

"FirstAssist’s strong presence in the UK complements our position as an industry leader with a broad global network of health care providers and direct marketing expertise in Europe and across Asia-Pacific. FirstAssist and Cigna clients and customers will benefit through an expanded range of products from a trusted brand."
